SMI introduces insulated curtains for temperature controlled vehicle rear doors

The new Tempro® Back-Stop curtains from Seymour Manufacturing is the first insulated cold stop device to be designed to save energy loss from the back of a chilled or frozen vehicle.  It is simple to fit, driver friendly and economical to buy.  The curtains are available either as an option for new trailers or truck, or they can be retrofitted to existing vehicles.

Substantial energy and fuel savings can be achieved when using the curtains and the flexibility and simple functionality of the system provides easy access during loading and unloading whilst still retaining the required temperature with the vehicle rear doors open.

SMI‘s Tempro® Back Stop is an insulated door curtain based on SMI’s successful Cold Stop curtains, originally developed for supermarket cold rooms and freezers, which, due to their thermal efficiency reduce cold room energy consumption by allowing optimum settings on evaporator equipment to achieve the internal working temperature and minimise loss. Customer experience and SMI’s validated research has shown that when using these curtains energy savings range from a stunning 18% to 25% in a chiller room to an amazing 30% to 35% in freezers.

Driver friendly Back-Stop curtains are activated simply by the driver pulling open the  curtain through which he wishes to enter. The Tempro® curtain is held in place by an electro-magnet. Any of the four curtains can be opened in this way and any combination.
On exiting from the vehicle, the driver simple pulls a handle, presses and button or uses the tail lift to automatically close the open door panels.  The minimum protection while the load is being accessed is 75%.

Back-Stop curtains can be made to any width or height, are usually in fours, two on the front rail and two on the back rail that are fitted close together. They are soft and lightweight, easily cleaned, hygienic and flexible, fit well and do not split, thus avoiding the expense of frequent costly replacement. They conserve significant amounts of energy while the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded and also protect loss from frequently damaged back door seals and bodywork..

The Back Stop system consists of four movable insulated Tempro® curtains, two suspended on the front rail and two on the back, all fitted on one SMI sliding bar  mounted below the truck ceiling. All four Tempro® curtains are fitted with a window made from clear cold safe PVC to allow outside light into the freezer or chiller space  when the curtains are closed.

The main sliding aluminium tracks comprise two rails closely parallel to each other holding two curtains suspended from two roller carriers. The two inner parts of the curtain are mounted onto the back rail and are held shut in the middle by two elastomeric springs. The two outer parts can be moved by hand to any position on their track as required. They are held in position by an electro-magnet that requires only 24V DC, and can be released back into their position by a pull handle, button or triggered by the action of a tail lift.
